An apology … Why are we still waiting?

New Zealand is lagging behind other countries in acknowledging that forced adoptions happened in New Zealand

Successive governments have made no moves to redress the harm caused by adoption despite numerous requests and petitions to do so.

What will it take to make the government understand that it is imperative to acknowledge and properly address the harms caused?

Who is asking for an apology and why?

Adopted people, their mothers and their families

  • The majority of adopted people grew up without any knowledge of their family. For many, this manifest in a sense of isolation and not-belonging that has had life-long impacts.

  • Despite common belief, adopted people do not have automatic rights to the records and files pertaining to their adoption. This is a right non-adopted people have.
